Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte held a telephone conversation with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Commander in Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), to discuss latest developments in Libya.

According to a statement by the Italian government, the key issues discussed during the call were the UN-led process and the follow-up of the Berlin Conference.

During the conversation, Conte also called for an urgent resumption of intra-Libyan dialogue.

Conte reiterated the necessity of a political solution, the rejection of any military option and the need for an immediate ceasefire, the statement read.

Late on Monday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that Libya’s warring parties have agreed to restart ceasefire talks. This comes after weeks of intense fighting near the capital Tripoli.

In a statement, UNSMIL said it welcomed plans to resume talks based on earlier 5+5 military talks in Geneva. These involved five senior officers, appointed by each side.
