Foreign Embassies Concerned Over Militia Clashes in Libyan Capital

As violent clashes between militias intensify in Tripoli, major world embassies situated in Libya are voicing their alarm and concern.

The EU Ambassador, José Sabadell has publicly backed the call from the UN’s Special Envoy, Abdoulaye Bathily, emphasising the urgent need for de-escalation and prioritising civilian protection.

Sabadell highlighted the paramount responsibility that rests on the shoulders of political and security stakeholders in Libya, noting that violence shouldn’t be a tool for political advantage or personal gain.

Similarly, the French Embassy has expressed grave concerns about the unfolding violence, especially its ramifications on the local civilian population.

The US Embassy’s response has been forthright, emphasising the critical importance of preserving civilian lives. As well as pushing for an immediate cessation of hostilities to maintain Libya’s recent progress towards a more stable state and forthcoming elections.

In line with these sentiments, the UK Ambassador to Libya, Caroline Hurndall, has voiced her concerns about the spiralling violence in the capital, stressing that the lives of civilians must be safeguarded at all costs.

Germany’s Ambassador, Michael Ohnmacht called on all involved parties to end the violence and curb the escalations. Echoing Bathily’s sentiments, Ohnmacht urged, “All sides must cease the violence and act towards de-escalation.”

In his statement, the UN Envoy expressed profound concerns regarding the current security trajectory in Tripoli. He reiterated the importance of prioritising civilian safety

He also called for an immediate de-escalation of violence and an end to the ongoing armed clashes. “Violence should never be an acceptable means to resolve disagreements. “Instead, all parties must work towards preserving the security gains achieved in recent years and address their differences through peaceful dialogue.”

The UN Envoy reiterated the responsibility of all actors involved to maintain the current relative stability, and create a supportive atmosphere for conducting elections, which will fulfil the aspirations of the Libyan people.

Notably, violent armed clashes broke out on Tuesday in Tripoli, with the use of heavy weaponry. Intermittent sounds of clashes were heard in several neighbourhoods, particularly in Ain Zara, Tarik Al-Shok, and Al-Hadaba Al-Khadra.

The clashes erupted following the arrest of Mahmoud Hamza, the commander of the 444th Brigade, by the Special Deterrence Force (SDF) at Mitiga Airport. Hamza was en route to Misrata to attend a military parade alongside Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba.

Meanwhile, Buraq Airline announced the temporary suspension of its international and domestic flights from Mitiga Airport until further notice, citing circumstances beyond its control.
