The Libyan Ministry of Health, in collaboration with sponsoring companies, inaugurated the 9th Conference of the Libyan Heart Association in Benghazi. This significant event is held under the patronage of the Libyan Government’s Council of Ministers, led by Osama Hammad, and attended by the House of Representatives (HoR).

The conference is scheduled to take place over three consecutive days, from December 29th to 31st, 2023. It features a host of medical and scientific talents from Libya and international participants from Canada, the United States, Ireland, Egypt, and Tunisia.

Dr. Asweiker Bozid, Director of Medical Affairs at the Ministry of Health, praised the Ministry’s role as a primary supporter of the conference. The event witnessed the participation of over 700 physicians and 200 female doctors. He emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to supporting and localising heart disease treatment, including enhancing the training and competence of physicians.

The conference hosts a series of research papers and scientific presentations that reflect the latest global developments in cardiac medicine, contributing to ongoing improvements in this critical field.

Dr. Zaki Biltamr, the Chairman of the Organising Committee, welcomed the presence of the Minister of Health, Dr. Osman Abdul Jalil, appreciating his continuous support and dedication to the field of cardiology and his contribution to fostering scientific advancement in this area.

Notably, a visiting medical team from Egypt successfully performed 11 open-heart surgeries on children with congenital heart defects at the Benghazi Medical Centre.

The surgeries were conducted based on the registered lists with the local medical committees, according to a statement from the Medical Services Support and Development Agency Thursday.

This initiative is part of the domestic treatment project supported by the Government of National Unity (GNU), as stated in the press release.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Moammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
