Counterfeit Drug Factory Uncovered in Libya

In a major crackdown, the Libyan Food and Drug Control Center (FDCC) raided a suspected illegal facility in Tobruk, believed to be manufacturing and forging medications branded with global trademarks.

According to a statement from the FDCC, the raid uncovered counterfeit drugs for various illnesses including diabetes, Panadol, cold and flu medications, epilepsy, and semi-banned narcotic drugs. The discovery was particularly alarming due to the use of basic household substances like cornstarch, flour, and powder in the drug-making process.

Previously, the FDCC, in collaboration with Tobruk’s Public Order Prosecution, Anti-Corruption Prosecution, and Drug Control Agency, received reports about individuals unlawfully producing substandard drugs while forging international trademarks. This led to the joint operation which successfully seized the entire quantity of drugs and equipment used in the manufacturing and packaging processes.

Following the seizure, the FDCC initiated strict measures to secure the confiscated items. The organisation has also directed its inspection teams to intensify their scrutiny across pharmacies and health facilities to detect and destroy these counterfeit drugs.

This significant operation by the FDCC highlights the ongoing battle against illegal drug manufacturing and the risks posed to public health by counterfeit medications. The crackdown in Tobruk represents a critical step in safeguarding the quality and safety of pharmaceuticals in the region.

Last month, the Libyan Ministry of Interior destroyed a significant quantity of cocaine discovered on the shores in the Daryanah area. This action was taken following instructions from the Deputy Minister of Interior, Faraj Egaim.

The drugs, estimated at around 27 kilograms, were brought to the office of the Deputy Minister of the Interior. Subsequently, a decision was issued to form a committee to undertake legal proceedings in this matter.

The committee coordinated with the Criminal Investigation Department, which then took the necessary steps regarding the case.

The incident reflects the ongoing efforts by Libyan authorities to combat drug trafficking, and maintain security along the country’s coastal regions. The destruction underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing anti-drug laws, and preventing illegal substances from entering and circulating within the country.
