The Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar hosted a high-level delegation from the Italian government on Tuesday at the army’s headquarters in Benghazi. Led by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, the delegation included Deputy Foreign Minister Edmondo Cirielli, Italian intelligence chief General Gianni Caravelli, and several other Italian government officials.
General Haftar welcomed the Italian delegation, expressing gratitude for the visit aimed at discussing and exchanging views to enhance partnership and cooperation in security, economic, and trade fields.
The Italian delegation conveyed greetings and congratulations from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the Commander-in-Chief and the Libyan people on the occasion of Ramadan.
They praised the Libyan National Army’s efforts in combating terrorism, extremism, and illegal immigration, affirming the Italian government’s support for efforts to enhance the political process and conduct elections in Libya for lasting stability.
Days prior, Haftar emphasized the importance of upgrading and rehabilitating Derna Hospital, including installing advanced medical equipment, during a meeting with Prime Minister Osama Hammad.
They reviewed the current status of healthcare services and government efforts to address challenges, particularly in cancer care.
Following the impact of Mediterranean storm Daniel on September 10, which caused significant casualties and destruction in eastern Libyan cities, including Derna, Hammad announced the formation of the “Derna and Affected Areas Reconstruction Fund” to oversee reconstruction efforts.
In related news, Japan committed $1.6 million to support UNICEF’s flood relief activities in eastern Libya, adding to a previous $1 million donation. The funds aim to improve health, water, sanitation, and child protection services for 165,000 people, including 75,000 children, coinciding with the reopening of the Japanese Embassy in Libya, demonstrating Japan’s continued commitment to supporting those affected by the floods.
