On Thursday, Libya’s Minister of Transportation, Mohamed Shahoubi announced that Turkish Airlines has officially resumed its operations in Libya, marking a significant milestone with the arrival of its first flight at Mitiga International Airport in the nation’s capital, Tripoli.

This signals a turning point for Libya in stabilizing and securing its aviation sector and reinforcing its ties with the international community.

In a press conference dedicated to the occasion, Minister Shahoubi emphasized the flight’s significance as a testament to the international aviation community of Libya’s adherence to global standards of civil aviation safety and security.

The return of Turkish Airlines is expected to act as a catalyst, encouraging other international carriers to reassess and potentially resume flights to Libya, thus broadening the country’s access to global travel networks.

The collaboration between Libyan aviation authorities and Turkish Airlines goes beyond mere flight operations. Minister Shahoubi outlined the multifaceted partnership that encompasses cooperation in training, maintenance services, and investment opportunities, integral for the advancement and modernization of Libya’s aviation infrastructure.

Shahoubi also unveiled Libya’s ambitions to complete a comprehensive digital transformation project within its aviation sector by the middle of 2024. This initiative aims to upgrade operational efficiency, enhance passenger experience, and position Libya at the forefront of aviation technology in the region.

After a decade-long pause, the resurgence of Turkish Airlines in Libya follows the signing of strategic memoranda of understanding between the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority and the airline. Bilal Eksi, the General Manager of Turkish Airlines, confirmed the operation of three weekly flights to Mitiga Airport, with plans to expand services to include Benghazi’s Benina Airport and Misrata Airport soon.

With plans to operate three weekly flights to Mitiga Airport and future expansions to include Benghazi’s Benina Airport and Misrata Airport, Turkish Airlines is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing Libya’s domestic and international connectivity

This reestablishment of air links with Turkey and the broader international community is a clear indicator of Libya’s ongoing efforts to recover from years of conflict and instability. It reflects the nation’s commitment to rebuild its transportation infrastructure, foster economic growth, and open new avenues for tourism and international cooperation.
