On Tuesday, the undersecretary for Political Affairs at the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Khalil Issa met with Jacek Chodorowicz, Director of the Africa and Middle East Department at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss final arrangements to reopen the Polish embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
In a statement, the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the Polish delegation’s visit aims to finalize preparations for the embassy’s reopening. This includes the resumption of consular services, particularly the issuance of Schengen visas to Libyan citizens, facilitating travel and enhancing bilateral ties.
On his part, the Libyan official praised this pivotal move, emphasizing its potential to strengthen Libyan-Polish relations. “This is a significant step that will enhance bilateral relations between our countries,” Issa stated.
He also highlighted the Government of National Unity’s proactive foreign policy, which encourages countries to restore their diplomatic missions in Tripoli. The government has committed to providing all necessary support to ensure the smooth operation of these missions.
The reopening of the Polish embassy in Tripoli marks a milestone in Libya’s diplomatic resurgence. Many foreign embassies reduced operations or closed due to the conflict and instability following the 2011 revolution. As Libya works towards stabilization and reconstruction, the return of foreign diplomatic missions indicates growing confidence in the country’s security and governance.
Poland’s decision aligns with an increasing trend among European nations to re-establish their presence in Libya. This move underscores Poland’s commitment to supporting Libya’s transitional phase and signals potential growth in economic, cultural, and political exchanges. The embassy’s reopening is expected to facilitate robust diplomatic and consular relations, enabling smoother travel and business interactions for citizens of both countries.
Moreover, this step is part of broader international efforts to support Libya’s recovery and development. By resuming diplomatic operations, Poland is poised to play a crucial role in fostering stability and cooperation in the region.
