Libya & UN Discuss Preparations for Migration Forum in Tripoli

The Head of the Mediterranean Migration Forum and Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs in the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), Walid Al-Lafi, held a meeting on Monday with the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Georgette Gagnon. The meeting was part of the preparations for the upcoming Mediterranean Migration Forum.

The GNU’s media office reported that the discussions focused on issues related to Mediterranean migration and enhancing cooperation between the GNU and the United Nations to achieve common goals in this area.

During the meeting, Walid Al-Lafi received the first copy of the UN Humanitarian Mission’s activity report in Libya, which includes a comprehensive assessment of the humanitarian situation in the country and the challenges facing the mission in implementing its programs and projects.

Al-Lafi expressed his appreciation for the vital role played by the United Nations in supporting Libya, affirming the government’s commitment to cooperating with the UN to ensure the success of the Mediterranean Migration Forum and achieve the desired outcomes. He highlighted Libya’s determination to collaborate with all parties involved in this issue.

Georgette Gagnon, on her part, expressed gratitude for the efforts made by the GNU to organize the forum, which will be hosted in Tripoli on the 17th of this month. The forum will see extensive participation from relevant African and European countries, aiming to strengthen relations and establish a strategic framework for dialogue and cooperation between Africa and Europe.

This meeting represents a step toward enhancing international cooperation and coordinating efforts to address the common challenges related to Mediterranean migration.
