Algeria has reiterated its strong support for UN-led efforts to resolve the crisis in Libya. Amar Benjamaa, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized the importance of a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process as the foundation for stability and progress.
Speaking at a press conference in New York to present the UNSC’s agenda, Benjamaa called for efforts to focus on creating the necessary conditions for transparent and inclusive elections. He underscored that any political solution must prioritize the ownership and leadership of the Libyan people, ensuring the process is not imposed from outside.
As Algeria takes on the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for January, Benjamaa highlighted the need to harmonize regional and international efforts under the UN’s umbrella to avoid redundancy and enhance effectiveness. This integrated approach, he noted, is vital to achieving a lasting resolution to Libya’s ongoing crisis.
Another key focus of Algeria’s agenda is the protection of Libya’s frozen assets. Benjamaa reiterated Algeria’s stance that these resources must remain intact and safeguarded against misuse or seizure, ensuring they are preserved for the benefit of the Libyan people.
Algeria’s role as a member of the Security Council provides a platform to advocate for these priorities. By emphasizing the importance of inclusive elections and sustainable governance, Algeria seeks to foster an environment where Libyans can determine their own future.
Benjamaa expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations among Libyan stakeholders would lead to concrete progress, paving the way for a unified and peaceful Libya. Algeria, a longstanding advocate for diplomatic solutions, continues to champion a neutral and supportive role, urging all parties to prioritize the national interest over factional divisions.
This renewed commitment by Algeria comes at a time when Libya remains at a crossroads, with challenges ranging from political instability to the management of vital resources.
