MedSky Airlines has announced the launch of its first flights to Malta from Benghazi’s Benina International Airport, marking the end of a 14-year absence from European skies.

In a statement released by the airline, MedSky expressed pride in connecting Libya with the heart of the Mediterranean once again. “We are thrilled to announce the resumption of flights from Benghazi to Malta after a 14-year hiatus,” the company stated.

The inaugural flight to Malta took off today, Thursday, 16 January 2025, from Benina International Airport, signifying a significant step in reconnecting Libya with European destinations. The resumption of these flights is expected to bolster travel and trade opportunities between the two regions, providing convenience for both business and leisure travellers.

MedSky Airlines’ initiative reflects broader efforts to revitalise Libya’s aviation sector and strengthen international ties. This development comes amid increased focus on restoring connectivity with European countries, facilitating economic growth, and improving mobility for Libyan citizens.

The relaunch of flights to Malta also highlights the strategic importance of Benina International Airport as a gateway to Europe. MedSky Airlines aims to expand its operations further, bringing more destinations within reach for Libyan travellers and strengthening the country’s presence in global aviation networks.

Earlier this month, Italy and Libya resumee direct commercial flights after more than ten years of hiatus. The first flights was operated by ITA Airways from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Tripoli, coinciding with a flight by Libyan airline Medsky.

In a statement, Pierluigi Di Palma, President of the Italian Civil Aviation Authority, emphasized the significance of this development, highlighting that the friendship between Rome and Tripoli is being strengthened through this direct connection. According to Di Palma, the resumption of flights will open doors for enhanced cultural, economic, and trade relations that benefit both nations.

Di Palma also underscored the role of air transport as a bridge uniting diverse cultures and fostering exchanges and relationships between nations for the collective growth and well-being of all.
