The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee of the Libyan House of Representatives, Yousef Al-Aqouri, met with the Russian Ambassador to Libya, Haider Rashid Aganin, to discuss the opening of the Russian Cultural House and the establishment of a Russian consulate in Benghazi.
According to the official spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Abdullah Belihaq, the meeting also covered the latest developments in Syria and Palestine, along with the political situation in Libya, including the electoral process and the outcomes of a recent meeting held in Cairo between the House of Representatives and the Libyan High Council of State.
Al-Aqouri highlighted the deep-rooted historical ties between Libya and Russia and expressed the House of Representatives’ commitment to enhancing cooperation across all sectors. He emphasised the significant role Russia plays in supporting Libya’s stability.
For his part, the Russian Ambassador appreciated the significance of the visit, reaffirming Russia’s dedication to strengthening cooperation with Libya, especially in terms of parliamentary collaboration between the Libyan House of Representatives and the Russian State Duma.
He also confirmed Russia’s commitment to supporting Libya’s electoral process, considering it the sole pathway for the Libyan people to select their representatives.
Regarding the Russian consulate in Benghazi, the Ambassador noted that preparations are underway to open it soon, which will further bolster bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.
The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.
The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.
Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
