The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), in conjunction with U.S. Strategic Command, carried out a significant training exercise with the Libyan military’s tactical air controllers near Sirte, Libya, on February 26. The training aimed to promote the reunification process of Libya’s military and security institutions.
Two U.S. B-52H Stratofortress aircraft from the 2nd Bomb Wing based at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana participated in the exercise. The aircraft transited Libyan airspace as Libyan and U.S. Joint Tactical Air Controllers collaboratively guided them in a simulated mission.
Lieutenant General John Brennan, Deputy Commander of U.S. Africa Command, emphasized the exercise as a reflection of the ongoing cooperation with Libyan forces. “We are committed to continued cooperation with Libyan forces in support of a stable, unified, and sovereign Libya,” he stated.
This event not only showcased the unity and professionalism of the Libyan military but also demonstrated the United States’ commitment to maintaining strong cooperative relationships with its international partners.
The B-52s’ journey from the United States to Libya was part of a Bomber Task Force mission, which was coordinated with Libyan counterparts. This operation underscores the United States’ capability to project power globally and reinforces the collective defense and security of the U.S., its partners, and allies.
Such missions are crucial for maintaining a high state of readiness, interoperability, and proficiency, enhancing the ability of U.S. and international partners to tackle shared security challenges and achieve mutual goals.
U.S. Africa Command, responsible for 53 African states, is one of the 11 U.S. Department of Defense combatant commands. It plays a pivotal role in countering transnational threats, strengthening security forces, and responding to crises. AFRICOM’s area of responsibility includes more than 800 ethnic groups, over 1,000 languages, vast natural resources, a landmass three-and-a-half times the size of the U.S., and nearly 19,000 miles of coastline. Working alongside its partners, AFRICOM is dedicated to countering malign actors and enhancing regional security.
