Libyan Presidential Candidate Urges Trump to Pardon Lockerbie Suspect

Libyan Presidential candidate, Mohamed Al-Mazoughi, has called on US President Donald Trump to issue a pardon for Abu Ajila Masud and facilitate his return to Libya. Alternatively, Al-Mazoughi suggested that Masud could continue his legal proceedings in Libya under international supervision, if necessary.

Al-Mazoughi stressed that the case of Abu Ajila Masud has become a matter of public concern in Libya, particularly given Masud’s deteriorating health condition. He urged the US administration to find an urgent and humanitarian solution to the issue.

Masud, a former Libyan intelligence officer, is currently on trial in the United States over allegations of involvement in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. The attack on Pan Am Flight 103 remains the deadliest terror attack on British soil, killing 270 people.

In a letter sent to President Trump, Al-Mazoughi praised the current US administration for its efforts in resolving global conflicts and correcting the perceived mistakes of previous governments. He cited examples such as the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, and the release of American hostages abroad.

Al-Mazoughi argued that granting clemency to Masud would not only bring relief to his family but also resonate positively with the Libyan people. He emphasised that such a move would reflect the US’s role as a global leader committed to both justice and humanity.
