Libyan-Tunisian Agreement to Boost Benghazi’s Medical Infrastructure

The General Director of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, Belgassem Haftar, has signed contracts for the construction of two major hospitals in the eastern city of Benghazi. The move is part of a wider government strategy to revitalise healthcare infrastructure and improve public services in the region.

According to a statement published on the Fund’s official Facebook page, the contracts were signed with the Libyan-Tunisian General Contracting Company. The agreement marks a significant step forward in efforts to enhance access to medical services in Benghazi, Libya’s second-largest city.

The first project involves the construction of a paediatric surgery and medicine hospital, which will have a total capacity of 490 beds. The second project is the establishment of a maternity and gynaecology hospital, designed to accommodate up to 200 beds. Both facilities are expected to meet international medical standards and address urgent gaps in healthcare provision.

The Development and Reconstruction Fund described the initiative as part of a comprehensive plan to support the city’s healthcare sector and provide modern facilities for its growing population. The projects also aim to create jobs and stimulate the local economy during the construction phase and beyond.

These developments come amid broader efforts by Libyan authorities to restore basic services and rebuild infrastructure in conflict-affected areas. Benghazi, having experienced years of instability, has been a priority for reconstruction projects led by the eastern-based government.

Once completed, the hospitals are expected to significantly improve healthcare access and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised treatment. The projects are seen as a critical investment in the city’s future.
