On Tuesday, the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced the arrival of a high-capacity 66/220 kV power transformer at the North Sebha power station, marking a new step in ongoing efforts to improve the stability and efficiency of the power grid across southern Libya.
The transformer, a critical component in power transmission and distribution, is being prepared for installation as part of GECOL’s broader national infrastructure plan.
Technical teams on site are currently completing groundwork and handling operations to safely position the transformer before beginning installation in the coming days, according to the company’s approved schedule.
This development comes as part of GECOL’s strategic initiative to resolve persistent issues affecting Libya’s power grid—particularly in the south, where many areas have suffered from chronic instability, high energy demand, and frequent outages.
In its statement, GECOL emphasized that the delivery and upcoming installation of the transformer are key to addressing the region’s growing consumption needs. It aims to reduce system overloads, enhance voltage control, and strengthen the reliability of power supply to Sebha and surrounding communities.
The company reiterated that this effort is not an isolated intervention but part of a comprehensive plan to modernize Libya’s power infrastructure, especially in underserved and high-load zones. GECOL is working to implement long-term technical solutions to ensure consistent, efficient electricity distribution, critical to supporting daily life, public services, and economic activity across southern Libya.
This investment in Sebha signals a broader commitment to decentralizing infrastructure improvements, ensuring regions outside Tripoli receive the upgrades needed to support development and reduce regional disparity in access to energy.
