On Saturday, Libya’s Parliament Speaker Ageela Saleh met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo to discuss the ongoing political crisis in Libya and efforts to restore stability. Both leaders stressed their shared commitment to preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The meeting, attended by Hamid Al-Safi, political advisor to the Libyan Parliament, and Egypt’s Intelligence Chief Major General Hassan Rashad, focused on finding a comprehensive political settlement to Libya’s crisis. Both sides highlighted the need for urgent presidential and parliamentary elections to end the country’s prolonged transitional phase.
President El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for Libya’s national institutions and reiterated Cairo’s consistent position that Libya’s political and security stability is deeply connected to Egypt’s own national interests. He called for intensified efforts to unify Libya’s fragmented political bodies and enable the Libyan people to choose their leaders through fair, inclusive elections.
El-Sisi also emphasized the necessity of removing all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory without delay. He stressed that their continued presence undermines Libya’s sovereignty and prevents the restoration of full security and state authority across the country. The departure of foreign troops, he said, is essential for Libya’s institutions to operate independently and for the nation to regain control of its own future.
Additionally, President El-Sisi expressed Egypt’s strong interest in contributing to Libya’s post-conflict reconstruction. He offered Egyptian technical expertise and resources to support Libya’s economic recovery, infrastructure development, and long-term growth.
In response, Ageela Saleh expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s steadfast role in supporting Libya’s unity and stability. He commended Egypt’s historic relationship with Libya and praised President El-Sisi for his leadership in promoting dialogue and political reconciliation. Saleh described Egypt’s backing as a key foundation for helping Libya navigate its transition and move toward national elections.
