Libya’s Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdel-Sadiq, met with Nicola Orlando, the European Union Ambassador to Libya, to discuss opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the energy sector. The meeting highlighted Libya’s potential role in ensuring Europe’s energy security, given its significant gas reserves and existing infrastructure such as the Greenstream pipeline linking Libya to Europe.
Minister Abdel-Sadiq emphasised Libya’s openness to strategic partnerships, aiming to build a sustainable business model with European partners. He underlined that Libya’s energy sector is well-positioned to contribute to Europe’s diversification efforts, particularly in the current geopolitical context where securing alternative energy sources has become a priority.
The discussions also focused on the upcoming Libya International Gas Forum, scheduled for December. The forum will serve as a key platform to strengthen cooperation and attract investments, particularly in the development of Libya’s gas resources with EU backing.
Minister Abdel-Sadiq reiterated that Libya’s Energy Vision 2030–2035 places green transition at its core, aligning with the EU’s clean energy priorities. He called for the engagement of financial institutions to support investments in human capital and job creation across industries such as petrochemicals, renewable energy, and gas processing.
In closing, the minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing a “zero gas flaring” policy across all future projects. He also stressed the importance of public awareness initiatives, including the Energy Generation campaign, which aims to promote a culture of energy transition and ensure a sustainable future for Libya’s energy sector.
