The Chief of Staff of Libya’s Ground Forces, General Saddam Haftar, arrived in Chad on a brief visit to discuss bilateral issues with Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
According to a statement from the Chadian presidency, the two officials focused on reopening the shared border between Libya and Chad. Talks included restoring cross-border trade, addressing the situation of Chadian nationals detained in Libya, and fostering peace in the region.
The high-level meeting, which lasted over two hours, also addressed border security, trade facilitation, and migration management. Both sides emphasised the importance of stabilising the frontier zone and strengthening regional cooperation.
Discussions highlighted plans to reopen road links between Chad and Egypt via Libyan territory, potentially boosting regional commerce. Déby praised the historic ties between the Libyan and Chadian people and reaffirmed Chad’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in Libya.
This meeting follows a visit by Chadian Defence Minister Issakha Maloua on 25 May to Benghazi. That visit, led by a high-ranking delegation, aimed to enhance military and security cooperation between the two neighbouring states.
The Libyan News Agency reported at the time that the Chadian delegation visited in response to an official Libyan invitation. The talks marked a new step towards solidifying joint efforts to counter regional threats and promote security in the Sahel and Sahara regions.
With rising concerns over cross-border smuggling, militant activity, and irregular migration, the two countries are seeking stronger coordination to maintain stability and mutual interests.
