Libya’s Parliament-designate Foreign Minister, Abdel-Hadi Al-Hwaij, met the Consul General of Sudan in Benghazi, Abdelrahman Mohamed Rahmatallah, to discuss joint efforts on the voluntary return programme for Sudanese nationals residing and displaced in Libya.
The meeting focused on follow-up steps to previous consultations and the practical arrangements required to implement the repatriation initiative. According to the Sudanese Consul General, more than 50,000 Sudanese citizens have already registered online to take part in the voluntary return programme. The registration process will remain open until 25 September 2025.
Rahmatallah presented a detailed briefing on the measures being undertaken, including coordination mechanisms, logistical planning, and the verification process for applicants. He underlined that the programme is designed to ensure safe, organised, and dignified return for Sudanese nationals wishing to leave Libya.
The Consul General expressed appreciation for the attention given by Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Parliament-designate government to the concerns of the Sudanese community. He also praised the role of the Libyan National Army in providing security support and facilitating essential services to assist the programme’s implementation.
For his part, Minister Al-Hwaij reaffirmed Libya’s commitment to continue close cooperation with Sudanese authorities and institutions. He stressed that the initiative reflects the strong historical ties and mutual interests shared by both nations.
The meeting marks another step in ongoing Libya–Sudan cooperation, with both sides aiming to ensure the programme’s success. The voluntary return scheme is expected to ease pressure on local communities while providing Sudanese citizens in Libya with a structured opportunity to return home safely.
