Italian national carrier ITA Airways has announced the extension of its suspension of direct flights between Rome and Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport until October 31, 2025, citing ongoing operational challenges and security concerns.
In a statement published by Italian travel outlet Business Mobility Travel, the airline said the decision is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the safety of passengers and crew members.
“The company is closely monitoring the security situation in Libya and will continue to assess developments before making any new decisions on flight resumption,” the statement read.
The airline had only resumed commercial flights between Rome and Tripoli in January 2025, ending a decade-long suspension that began following the outbreak of conflict in 2014.
ITA Airways’ January relaunch marked a symbolic milestone in restoring air connectivity between Italy and Libya, but the current suspension raises fresh concerns over the sustainability of international travel amid Libya’s fragile security environment.
The move comes as other international airlines continue to weigh the risks of operating in Libyan airspace, despite growing demand for reconnecting the country to European hubs.
