Libya’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, under the government appointed by the House of Representatives, has agreed with Italian company Indco Engineering and Contracting to form a joint committee tasked with reviewing and upgrading the country’s power grid defence plan.
The agreement was reached during a meeting in Benghazi on Monday between Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Awad Al-Badri and Indco’s General Manager, Giovanni Aloisi, according to a statement published by the ministry.
During the meeting, the Italian company presented its technical expertise, highlighting previous projects and its ability to provide consultations and technical support to strengthen the national grid. The discussions focused on the current challenges facing Libya’s electricity network, which has struggled for years with rising demand, repeated breakdowns, and insufficient infrastructure.
The ministry noted that the talks specifically addressed the existing defence plan of the grid and the need to modernise it to ensure operational stability. Improving resilience against sudden outages and ensuring sustainable services for citizens were among the priorities discussed.
The two sides agreed to intensify meetings and establish a joint committee comprising representatives from the ministry, the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), and Indco. The committee will be responsible for reviewing and updating the grid’s defence plan, with the aim of boosting efficiency and enhancing operational security.
Minister Al-Badri stressed the importance of international partnerships, particularly with experienced global firms, to bring advanced technologies and modern expertise into Libya’s power sector. He underlined that strengthening the national grid is a key part of the ministry’s broader strategy to modernise infrastructure and stabilise electricity supply across the country.
