The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has announced the postponement of the start of the 2025 Premier League season to December, instead of the previously scheduled late-October date. The decision, according to the federation’s statement on Facebook, was based on “several objective reasons” related to national and international football commitments.
The LFF cited the national team’s preparations for the upcoming Arab Cup in Qatar as the primary reason for the delay. The Libyan national team is set to enter a training camp from 7 to 22 November, during which it will play two friendly matches — against Sudan on 12 November and Mauritania on 15 November. The team will then continue its camp domestically before departing for Doha on 22 November to face Palestine in a preliminary Arab Cup match scheduled for 25 November.
If Libya qualifies, the squad will remain in Qatar for about two more weeks to complete the tournament. Should it fail to advance, the team is expected to return home on 26 November, allowing the league to begin in early December.
The federation also noted that several foreign players in Libyan clubs will be engaged with their national teams during FIFA’s international window between 10 and 18 November. Additionally, the Confederation Cup fixture between Libya’s Al Ahli Tripoli and Morocco’s RS Berkane has been rescheduled for 1 November.
Financial and administrative challenges facing local clubs were another factor in the decision. The LFF acknowledged that several teams have yet to receive their allocated funding, impacting their readiness for the new season. It also referenced recent rulings from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which require adjustments in club participation and player registration.
The LFF concluded that the decision was made “to ensure a successful and stable football season,” promising to publish an updated schedule soon.
