The Head of the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL), Ahmed Hamza, met on Wednesday with the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Gianluca Alberini, and his accompanying delegation. The meeting, held in Tripoli, was also attended by the Head of Public Relations and International Cooperation, Walid Al-Hadhiri, and NIHRL member Mohammed Al-Lafi.

Discussions focused on several pressing issues, including the state of human rights in Libya, irregular migration, and the conditions of migrants and asylum seekers in detention centres. Both sides expressed concern about the activities of smuggling and human trafficking networks operating across the region.

The meeting also highlighted the need for stronger cooperation between Libya and Italy to address these challenges through legal and human rights frameworks. Ambassador Alberini reaffirmed Italy’s support for Libya’s efforts to combat organised crime, human trafficking, and cross-border criminal networks.

NIHRL representatives praised Italy’s continued assistance in facilitating voluntary repatriation programmes for migrants stranded in Libya. They also commended Rome’s role in supporting Libya’s efforts to curb irregular migration and strengthen institutional capacity in combating trafficking and smuggling operations.

The discussion underscored the shared commitment between both nations to uphold human rights and promote stability through enhanced international cooperation. NIHRL emphasised that tackling migration-related challenges requires collective regional action and sustained international backing.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to continue dialogue and explore further areas of technical and legal cooperation to protect migrants’ rights and enhance Libya’s human rights framework.
