Libyan Parliament Warns of Attempts to Breach Libyan Identity System

Libya’s House of Representatives Defence and National Security Committee has issued a stark warning over what it described as “manipulation and serious violations” within the Civil Registry Authority, saying the breaches have allowed foreign nationals to unlawfully obtain Libyan national ID numbers and access benefits reserved exclusively for Libyan citizens.

In a statement, the committee said the situation represents “a direct threat to national security and Libyan identity,” stressing that tampering with the state’s official civil records undermines national sovereignty and poses long-term risks to the stability of the country.

The committee called on all competent authorities to confront these violations immediately, launch full investigations, and refer every individual involved to the judiciary “in accordance with the law and without exception.” It also urged the application of the toughest penalties against anyone who facilitated or participated in these crimes, whether directly or indirectly.

The warning comes amid heightened national concern over the integrity of Libya’s civil registry, a system central to elections, public services, and the protection of citizenship rights. Lawmakers say safeguarding the registry is essential to preventing identity fraud, illegal access to state benefits, and compromised voter rolls—all of which could undermine future electoral processes and national stability.
