Libya’s Attorney General, Al-Siddiq Al-Sour, reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding press freedom during a meeting with the Chairman of the Libyan News Agency (LANA), Abdulbaset Ahmed Aboudiya, and the Head of the Tripoli Journalists’ Syndicate, Mansour Al-Ahrash. The discussion highlighted the essential role of the media in exposing shortcomings within state institutions and confronting corruption through transparent reporting.
According to the Attorney General, free and responsible journalism remains a cornerstone of accountability in Libya. He stressed that the press plays a vital part in monitoring public performance and helping institutions uphold the law in the interest of citizens.
The meeting also reviewed the legal and administrative status of the Libyan News Agency, including key challenges related to its fixed and movable assets. One of the main issues discussed was the agency’s land located in the Al-Swani–Al-Krimiya area, allocated from public property in 1974 for broadcasting stations and antenna infrastructure. The Attorney General underscored the duty of the state to protect its assets from encroachment or unlawful seizure, holding relevant officials accountable for any form of negligence.
Aboudiya expressed appreciation for the Attorney General’s previous support to the agency, particularly in resolving disputes over its headquarters and in recovering parts of the transmission station land that had been taken over by unauthorised groups. He emphasised that such backing strengthens the agency’s ability to carry out its public service mission.
For his part, the Head of the Journalists’ Syndicate highlighted several obstacles facing the organisation, notably the urgent need for a permanent headquarters to improve its ability to serve media professionals. He stressed that enhancing the working environment of journalists contributes directly to elevating the quality of national media output.
The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the importance of protecting Libya’s public institutions, strengthening media independence, and ensuring that state assets remain fully preserved for public benefit.
