Libya’s Anti-Illegal Migration Agency in the Green Mountain region has intercepted and rescued 32 undocumented migrants of Bangladeshi nationality following the sinking of a boat off the coast of Al-Haniya, amid severe weather conditions.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the agency said it received an alert from the Green Mountain security operations room reporting that a vessel carrying undocumented migrants had capsized near Al-Haniya’s shoreline. In response, security authorities in the area immediately launched search and intervention operations.
The operation was carried out in coordination between the Al-Haniya police station and the investigation and information-gathering office of the Anti-Illegal Migration Agency’s Green Mountain branch. The coordinated response led to the successful interception of all migrants who had been on board the vessel.
Authorities confirmed that legal procedures were taken against the migrants in line with existing regulations. They were transferred to the Al-Bayda detention center, where they received first aid and necessary medical care. Medical examinations revealed that some individuals had sustained minor injuries.
After completing the required legal and administrative procedures, preparations were made to transfer the migrants to the Qanfouda detention center as part of arrangements for their deportation, in accordance with Libyan laws and regulations.
The Anti-Illegal Migration Agency stressed that the incident highlights the extreme dangers associated with irregular migration by sea, commonly referred to as “death boats.” The agency warned that such journeys pose a serious threat to human lives, particularly during unstable weather and hazardous maritime conditions along Libya’s coastline.
Libya remains a major transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean, with security agencies frequently reporting rescues and interceptions amid growing international concern over migrant safety and smuggling networks.
