The Media Centre of the Benghazi branch of the Municipal Guard has announced the launch of a distribution campaign providing subsidised meat and essential food commodities to residents in the city.
In a statement issued on Friday, the branch said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden on citizens and ensure the availability of basic goods at affordable prices amid ongoing economic pressures across Libya.
According to the statement, the distribution process is being carried out under the direct supervision of Municipal Guard officers, who are responsible for organising queues, verifying eligibility and ensuring that goods reach beneficiaries in a transparent and orderly manner. The branch stressed that the measures are designed to guarantee fairness and prevent any irregularities or exploitation.
The subsidised goods were supplied through a commodities monitoring committee formed by the Libyan National Army General Command. Funding for the initiative was provided by the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, according to the statement.
Officials said the campaign forms part of broader efforts to stabilise local markets and mitigate the impact of rising prices on households. Over recent months, fluctuations in the exchange rate and supply chain challenges have contributed to higher living costs in several Libyan cities.
The Benghazi Municipal Guard indicated that monitoring teams will remain on site throughout the distribution period to address complaints and ensure compliance with pricing regulations. Authorities also urged citizens to cooperate with officials and report any violations.
The initiative reflects continuing attempts by eastern Libyan institutions to respond to socio-economic pressures through targeted support programmes. While temporary in nature, officials said such measures are intended to provide immediate relief to families facing hardship and to reinforce oversight of market practices.
Further details regarding the duration of the campaign and the quantities allocated for distribution were not disclosed.
