Border Clash and Rescue Mission Underscore Libya’s Southern Security Push

Libya’s House of Representatives Defence and National Security Committee has praised the success of a military operation carried out by the Libyan National Army (LNA) along the southern border strip, which resulted in the rescue of soldiers abducted following a terrorist attack earlier this year.

The attack had targeted the Tumm border crossing and several nearby positions at dawn on 31 January, leading to the kidnapping of a number of troops. According to the committee, the hostages have now been safely returned to their units after what it described as a “qualitative and decisive” operation that also restored stability to the south.

In an official statement, the committee said the mission demonstrated the armed forces’ ability to manage field crises and respond swiftly to security threats. It described the operation as a new example of discipline, professionalism and national responsibility.

The statement added that army units engaged in intense clashes at several sites where terrorist groups had been positioned. The confrontations reportedly resulted in the killing of a number of militants and the capture of others. Security forces also seized quantities of weapons, ammunition and military equipment allegedly used by the armed groups.

The committee stressed that attempts to destabilise the southern region, facilitate smuggling activities or expand the influence of armed groups across the border would not deter the armed forces from continuing targeted operations. It pledged that all individuals involved in the kidnapping and attacks would be pursued, regardless of their affiliations.

Officials further underlined that military and security operations remain ongoing to dismantle mercenary networks, curb organised crime and secure border crossings. The committee concluded that the successful rescue mission reinforces the military’s presence in southern Libya and affirms its commitment to safeguarding national territory and protecting the country’s security.
