Sudanese Migrants in Libya Begin Journey Home Under New Repatriation Programme

The Sudanese embassy in Tripoli has announced the launch of the first phase of a voluntary return programme for Sudanese nationals residing in Libya, as part of efforts to facilitate safe repatriation amid ongoing regional challenges.

The embassy said it has begun practical arrangements for the first return convoy, in coordination with relevant authorities. The programme aims to assist Sudanese citizens who wish to return home by providing legal and logistical support to ensure a safe and orderly process.

According to officials, the embassy has started registering individuals who have expressed interest in returning. This step will help organise upcoming air and land transport schedules for the planned departures.

In a statement reported by Almashhad Al-Sudani newspaper, embassy officials said they are working to resolve issues related to travel documents and administrative procedures. They added that coordination is ongoing with Libyan authorities and international organisations to ensure the first phase proceeds without delays.

The initiative comes as many Sudanese migrants in Libya face uncertain conditions, including economic hardship and limited access to services. Voluntary return programmes are often seen as a key solution for migrants seeking safe passage back to their home countries.

Libya remains a major transit and destination country for migrants from across Africa. Ongoing instability and economic pressures have complicated migration management and increased the need for coordinated humanitarian responses.

However, challenges persist, including logistical constraints, documentation issues and funding limitations that can affect the pace of repatriation efforts.

Officials said the programme is expected to expand in later phases to include more beneficiaries, depending on available resources and coordination with international partners.

The embassy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sudanese nationals and ensuring their safe return through structured and transparent procedures.
