Libya has resumed liquefied petroleum gas imports through the port of Marsa Brega, marking the arrival of the first LPG tanker since 2017 in a step aimed at strengthening domestic supply and improving market stability.
The National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced that the tanker Gas Houston docked at the port carrying approximately 1,000 metric tons of cooking gas, equivalent to around 11,300 barrels. The shipment is intended to meet local demand and prevent shortages, particularly in household energy use.
Officials said the delivery reflects ongoing efforts to ensure steady fuel availability and reduce pressure on the domestic market, where supply disruptions have previously led to shortages.
The return of tanker operations at Marsa Brega follows extensive coordination between Brega Petroleum Marketing Company and Sirte Oil and Gas Production Company, aimed at restoring the port’s strategic role in handling LPG imports.
The port had remained inactive in terms of gas shipments for nearly nine years due to infrastructure challenges and operational constraints. Recent rehabilitation efforts have enabled the facility to resume activity and receive vessels once again.
Technical teams carried out major upgrades, including maintenance of gas storage tanks and modernization of loading and return pipelines connected to the port’s berths. Additional modifications were introduced to enhance safety standards and improve operational efficiency in line with industry requirements.
The National Oil Corporation said restoring the port’s capacity is part of a broader strategy to rehabilitate key facilities and strengthen the national energy supply chain.
