Ulrika Richardson, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator in Libya, has called for urgent action to address high youth unemployment rates, stressing the need for a coordinated national response.
Speaking at the opening of a consultative workshop on advancing Libya’s youth empowerment strategy, Richardson highlighted the importance of adopting a comprehensive, cross-sector approach to tackle challenges facing young people.
The event, organised with support from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, brought together Libya’s Ministry of Youth, national institutions, and multiple UN agencies, alongside the head of the National Council for Economic and Social Development.
Richardson emphasised that youth unemployment remains one of Libya’s most pressing socio-economic issues, calling for policies that not only create job opportunities but also ensure meaningful youth participation in decision-making at both local and national levels.
She noted that empowering young people is critical to long-term stability and sustainable development, particularly in a country navigating political and economic transitions.
The UN official reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Libya in developing a unified national youth strategy led by Libyan authorities. She added that the strategy must reflect the aspirations of young women and men across the country and be grounded in inclusive dialogue.
The workshop marks part of broader efforts to align national stakeholders and international partners around a shared framework aimed at improving economic opportunities, strengthening civic engagement, and enhancing the role of youth in shaping Libya’s future.
Observers say addressing youth unemployment will be key to reducing social tensions and unlocking Libya’s economic potential, especially as the country seeks to move beyond years of instability.
