Abdulhadi Al-Hwaij, Libya’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the eastern-based government, held talks on Tuesday with senior officials from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Benghazi to discuss strengthening humanitarian cooperation and coordination efforts in Libya.
The meeting brought together Al-Hwaij with Christian Cortes and Raad Al-Hadid.
According to officials, discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the Libyan Foreign Ministry and the IFRC, as well as coordinating efforts on several humanitarian and institutional issues aimed at supporting stability and strengthening humanitarian work across Libya.
Al-Hwaij stressed during the meeting the ministry’s commitment to expanding cooperation with international organisations and agencies in ways that serve Libya’s national interests and reinforce effective partnerships within approved legal frameworks.
The minister also highlighted the importance of cooperation between international organisations and local Libyan partners as a key condition for coordination and joint humanitarian activities inside the country.
For his part, Christian Cortes praised the role played by the Libyan Foreign Ministry in facilitating the work of international organisations operating in Libya.
He reaffirmed the IFRC’s commitment to maintaining coordination and cooperation with relevant Libyan authorities to achieve shared humanitarian objectives and improve support for vulnerable communities across the country.
Libya continues to work with international humanitarian agencies amid ongoing economic and security challenges affecting several regions. International organisations have increasingly expanded humanitarian programmes focused on healthcare, migration, disaster response and community support.
Observers say cooperation between Libyan authorities and international humanitarian organisations remains essential to improving aid delivery and strengthening institutional capacity following years of instability and conflict.
The meeting reflects broader efforts by eastern Libyan authorities to reinforce engagement with international partners and humanitarian institutions operating throughout Libya.
