New Theatre Festival Aims to Revive Cultural Heritage in Libya’s Shahat

A new cultural initiative aimed at promoting theatre and celebrating Libya’s rich heritage has been launched in the eastern city of Shahat, with organisers announcing the first edition of the “Cyrene Theatre Days” festival.

The event is being organised by the Cyrene Theatre Group and seeks to support Libya’s local theatre movement while strengthening the presence of performing arts in public spaces. Organisers say the initiative will focus on highlighting Libya’s cultural and historical heritage through theatrical productions inspired by local traditions and collective memory.

According to the organisers, the project is designed to encourage creative engagement with Libya’s heritage by transforming cultural narratives into live performances accessible to a wider audience. The initiative also seeks to promote greater public participation in cultural activities and expand opportunities for artistic expression outside conventional theatre venues.

The announcement has been welcomed by theatre practitioners, artists, and cultural observers, many of whom described the festival as a valuable addition to Libya’s cultural landscape.
