The vast majority of Libyans support holding credible national elections, fighting corruption and unifying state institutions, according to the results of a public opinion survey conducted by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya as part of its structured dialogue initiative.

The survey, conducted online and by telephone between December 2025 and April 2026, gathered views from Libyans across the country on political priorities and the future direction of the state.

According to the findings, 90% of participants supported the organisation of nationwide elections aimed at ending years of political division and institutional fragmentation.

The results also showed strong public demand for accountability measures, with 82% of respondents backing the exclusion of individuals implicated in corruption or human rights violations from positions of authority.

The survey findings were supplemented by discussions led by young Libyans through the mission’s digital youth platform, contributing to four main tracks of the structured dialogue process designed to identify national priorities and possible pathways towards political stability.

Participants highlighted the need to establish unified and legitimate institutions capable of governing the country effectively and restoring public confidence in state bodies.

Respondents also called for reducing the influence of armed groups on political and public life, describing security reform and stronger state institutions as essential steps towards long-term stability.

The survey further highlighted concerns and priorities specific to women and young people, whose views focused on political participation, economic opportunities and stronger safeguards for rights and representation.

The United Nations mission said the findings would contribute to ongoing discussions aimed at supporting a Libyan-led political process and helping stakeholders identify common ground on key national issues.

Libya has remained politically divided since 2014, with rival administrations and competing institutions continuing to operate in different parts of the country despite repeated international efforts to advance a comprehensive political settlement.
