The detention of a well-known social media influencer in Libya has sparked widespread public reaction after authorities accused her of leading a group involved in the alleged luring, kidnapping and abuse of a young woman in Tripoli.

The Tripoli Security Directorates Support Agency announced that it launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from a woman who alleged that she had been lured to a location in the capital, where she was held for several hours and subjected to physical and verbal abuse.

According to a statement issued by the agency, the victim also reported being threatened with sexual violence, filmed against her will and deprived of personal belongings, including mobile phones. Authorities said her vehicle was also taken and used for several hours before being recovered.

Following surveillance and investigative operations, security forces arrested the main suspect, identified as social media content creator Amira Al-Haddar, along with her sister. Authorities said both women hold the nationality of an Arab country. The investigation later expanded to include additional suspects believed to have been involved in the incident.

Security officials stated that preliminary findings suggest the suspect had built a strong online presence through advertising campaigns and viral social media content. Investigators are examining whether that public profile was used to facilitate criminal activities and attract potential victims.

The case has generated significant debate across Libya, with many social media users expressing shock at the allegations and questioning the growing influence of online personalities.

Several users argued that social media fame can sometimes conceal unlawful behaviour, while others said the case highlighted the need for greater scrutiny of public figures who cultivate large online audiences.

Born in 2001, Al-Haddar became widely known in Libya through beauty-related content and promotional campaigns. She also appeared on television programmes and built a substantial following through content focused on fashion, cosmetics and lifestyle topics.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet announced any formal court rulings regarding the suspects.
