Russia is working with Libyan authorities to open a Consulate General in the eastern city of Benghazi, according to a senior Russian Foreign Ministry official, marking a significant step in the development of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Libya.
Alexei Klimov, Director of the Consular Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti that discussions are currently underway with the Libyan side regarding the establishment of a Russian Consulate General in Benghazi. However, he noted that it remains too early to announce a specific timeline for when the diplomatic mission will begin operations.
“The work is underway with the Libyan side to open a Russian Consulate General in Benghazi at this stage,” Klimov said.
The announcement follows earlier remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who stated in April that Russia intended to resume the activities of its Consulate General in Benghazi in the near future. Lavrov made the comments after talks in Moscow with Taher Al-Baour, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Libya’s Government of National Unity.
Lavrov explained that the Russian Consulate General had previously operated in Benghazi before its activities were suspended in 1993. He added that Moscow remains committed to supporting Libya’s stability and unity through continued engagement with all political and social stakeholders across the country.
The planned reopening of the consulate is widely viewed as part of Russia’s broader efforts to strengthen its diplomatic, economic, and political ties with Libya. The move would also provide expanded consular services and facilitate closer cooperation between the two countries.
The latest development comes shortly after the Russian Embassy in Tripoli hosted celebrations marking Russia’s National Day. During the event, Russian Ambassador Haidar Aghanin reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with Libya.
In his address, Aghanin described Russia as a reliable friend and partner of a united, sovereign, independent, and prosperous Libya. He expressed his country’s desire to continue expanding cooperation with Libya across a range of sectors, including diplomacy, trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
The reopening of the Russian Consulate General in Benghazi would represent another milestone in the growing relationship between Russia and Libya, reflecting ongoing efforts by both sides to deepen engagement and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
