Libya MP Discusses Reviving Arab Maghreb Union Institutions

Libya Discusses Reviving Arab Maghreb The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee at Libya’s House of Representatives, Yousef Al-Agouri, has discussed ways to revive the institutions of the Arab Maghreb Union and strengthen joint Maghreb action during a meeting with the union’s Secretary-General, Tarek Ben Salem.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Arab Maghreb Union’s General Secretariat, in the presence of the Chairman of Libya’s National Planning Council, Ahmed Khalifa Ibridan.

Al-Agouri said the General Secretariat plays an important role in preserving the union’s institutions and working to reactivate them. He described the Arab Maghreb Union as one of the most important regional unity projects, given the historical, cultural, and civilisational ties shared by its member states.

He said strengthening joint Maghreb cooperation has become a strategic necessity in light of current regional challenges. He added that closer cooperation between member states would support security, stability, and sustainable development across North Africa.

Al-Agouri renewed the support of Libya’s House of Representatives for all efforts aimed at reviving the institutions of the Arab Maghreb Union and expanding cooperation among its members.

He said stronger Maghreb cooperation could help deepen economic integration, increase trade and investment exchange, and support better coordination on political issues. He also said cooperation between member states is important in security files, including counter-terrorism, illegal migration, and organised crime.

Al-Agouri also stressed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in bringing the peoples of the region closer together and strengthening institutional Maghreb cooperation. He said Libya’s House of Representatives looks forward to broader cooperation between parliaments and foreign affairs committees in the union’s member states.

He added that such cooperation would help exchange expertise and unify positions on common regional issues.

For his part, Ahmed Khalifa Ibridan underlined the importance of supporting efforts to activate the union’s institutions and strengthen mechanisms for cooperation and integration between Maghreb countries. He said these efforts should serve the interests of the region’s peoples and support development and stability.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on ways to give new momentum to joint Maghreb action. The discussions focused on adapting regional cooperation to current political and economic changes, while supporting the path of integration between the Arab Maghreb Union’s member states.

The talks come amid renewed calls to revive regional cooperation in North Africa and strengthen institutional coordination in response to shared challenges, including security, migration, trade, development, and regional stability.
