A group of 47 members of Libya’s House of Representatives has announced its support for a United States-backed initiative aimed at advancing a political settlement and ending years of division in the country.
In a joint statement, the lawmakers said lasting stability in Libya depends on a comprehensive national consensus that places the interests of the country above political differences. They stressed that any outcomes from the initiative must be based on national principles and produce practical, implementable solutions that reflect the will of the Libyan people.
The MPs also expressed readiness to support efforts designed to advance the political process and remove legislative and political obstacles that could hinder implementation. They said Libya urgently needs genuine national consensus and a responsible political partnership capable of overcoming division and strengthening state institutions.
The announcement follows support expressed by the Libyan National Army’s General Command for a proposal presented by Massad Boulos, senior adviser to US President Donald Trump for Arab and African affairs.
In a recent statement, the General Command described the proposal as a promising initiative that differs from previous international efforts. It said the plan reflects a realistic understanding of Libya’s political challenges and focuses on unifying executive institutions as a pathway towards broader national reconciliation and elections.
The General Command also declared its readiness to participate in direct negotiations with Libyan stakeholders to help develop a final framework leading to presidential and parliamentary elections.
Responding to the statement, Boulos welcomed the support of the General Command for US diplomatic efforts in Libya.
“The United States greatly values the support of the General Command of the Libyan National Army for US diplomatic efforts in Libya,” Boulos said.
He added that Washington would continue engaging stakeholders across Libya to help unify the country’s military, economic and political institutions. Boulos also praised recent efforts to reduce divisions, including participation in the unified budget agreement and Exercise Flintlock 2026.
He said Libyans deserve a path towards lasting peace, national unity and credible elections.
