EU Ambassador to Libya Nicola Orlando said Libya and the European Union have agreed on an action plan to speed up the removal of Libya from the EU Air Safety List, following talks in Tripoli with senior Libyan aviation officials.
Orlando said he held a productive meeting on Tuesday morning with Libya’s Minister of Transport, Mohamed Salem Al-Shahoubi, and the Head of the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority, Mohamed Abdul Salam Shleibek.
The meeting reviewed progress made so far in the aviation sector and discussed the next steps needed to support Libya’s efforts to restore full air connectivity with Europe.
According to Orlando, the two sides agreed on a practical plan aimed at accelerating the process of removing Libya from the EU aviation safety list. The move would mark an important step for Libya’s civil aviation sector and could help reopen wider opportunities for Libyan carriers and international air links.
Orlando also praised Libya’s new Integrated Control Centre, describing it as a strong model for effective digital transformation and modern management in the civil aviation sector.
The talks come as Libya continues efforts to upgrade its aviation oversight, improve safety standards and modernise airport and air traffic management systems. Restoring confidence in Libya’s civil aviation sector is seen as an important part of reconnecting the country with European markets and supporting economic, commercial and travel links.
The EU Air Safety List has remained one of the main obstacles facing Libyan aviation in recent years. Libyan authorities have been working with European partners to address safety requirements, strengthen regulatory systems and bring the sector closer to international standards.
The latest discussions in Tripoli suggest renewed momentum in Libya-EU cooperation on aviation safety, digital transformation and civil aviation governance.
