Libya’s embassy in Italy has announced the release of Mohamed Al-Mazoughi, the last of five Libyan nationals detained in the long-running case known as the “Libyan footballers case”, following a decision by Italian authorities to suspend the execution of his sentence.

Libyan Ambassador Mohannad Younes and embassy officials received Al-Mazoughi on Friday and completed arrangements for his temporary residence while legal proceedings continue.

The embassy said it remains in close coordination with the defence team to monitor developments in the case and ensure that Al-Mazoughi’s legal rights are protected under Italian law.

Ambassador Younes expressed his appreciation to the legal team representing the Libyan defendants, praising their professionalism and dedication. He specifically commended lawyers Cinzia Pecoraro, Antonio Pecoraro, Stefania Moscardini and Serena Romano, saying their efforts had played a decisive role in achieving the latest legal developments.

Al-Mazoughi, in turn, thanked the Libyan embassy and his lawyers for their continued legal support and assistance throughout the case.

With his release, all five Libyan citizens involved in the case are now out of detention, although related legal procedures remain ongoing.

The case dates back to 2015 when five Libyan footballers, including former Al-Tahadi player Tarek Jumaa Al-Amami, were arrested in Italy and accused of human trafficking and migrant smuggling following a deadly incident in the Sicily Channel.

Italian courts sentenced the men to 30 years in prison on 6 December 2015. The defendants have consistently denied the charges, insisting that they travelled to Europe in search of professional football opportunities and were wrongly accused following the migrant tragedy.

The Libyan embassy reiterated its respect for the Italian judicial system and expressed confidence that the legal process would continue in accordance with the law and principles of justice.
