Libya’s Development and Reconstruction Fund is continuing work on the ambitious redevelopment of Benghazi Sports City as part of a broader programme to modernise the country’s sporting infrastructure and build facilities that meet international standards.
The project forms part of a series of initiatives led by the fund, headed by Belgassem Haftar, to improve public infrastructure and support development across Libya’s regions.
According to the fund, the redevelopment aims to transform Benghazi Sports City into a modern sporting destination capable of hosting regional and international competitions and major sporting events.
The project includes the rehabilitation of the Suleiman Al-Darrat Sports Complex, with plans to increase its seating capacity to 3,500 spectators and add new facilities designed to improve the experience of athletes and visitors.
The wider development programme also includes the construction of specialised Olympic facilities and a modern swimming complex equipped according to internationally recognised technical standards.
Authorities said the project extends beyond existing sports venues and includes the creation of new playing fields, open recreational spaces and an urban promenade overlooking Lake Benghazi. A new amphitheatre is also planned as part of efforts to revitalise the sports city and expand its role as a centre for sporting and youth activities.
The Development and Reconstruction Fund said the project reflects its strategy of upgrading Libya’s infrastructure and creating modern facilities that support social and economic development.
The redevelopment of Benghazi Sports City is one of several large-scale infrastructure projects currently under way in eastern Libya, where authorities have launched extensive programmes covering roads, housing, public services and sports facilities in an effort to improve living conditions and strengthen the country’s capacity to host major events in the future.
