Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has confirmed the EU’s readiness to work with the UN in order to find a solution to the conflict in Libya.

During a press conference after an EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Borrell reviewed the latest developments in the Libyan crisis. He attempted to downplay reports of the EU’s willingness to send a ceasefire monitoring mission to Libya and stated, “We are ready for cooperation with the United Nations. The ceasefire should be respected, its sustainability guaranteed, and the political process launched, but we have not reached this point yet.”

The European official referred to the French announcement of the opening of the Marseille civil port for equipment confiscated by Operation IRINI and described this as “Good news.”

Borrell explained that IRINI continues its duties and that this is a process that the EU sees as an integral part of the international efforts to solve the Libyan conflict, under the auspices of the UN.
