The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, welcomed the roadmap approved by the Libyan Forum for Political Dialogue and reiterated his country’s support for any internal dialogue between Libyans.

The Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that FM Di Maio phoned the Acting Envoy to Libya, Stephanie Williams. The Italian top diplomat expressed his satisfaction with the adoption by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum of a roadmap for elections scheduled to take place on December 24, 2021.

Di Maio stressed Italy’s full support for the internal dialogue efforts led by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

“Di Maio hopes that the political process in Libya would remain under the umbrella of the UN mediation and the Berlin process,” the statement said.

He also called for avoiding the parallel initiatives that would weaken this frame of reference, stressing on the need to protect the Libyan negotiations from foreign interference.

Di Maio also welcomed the recent developments in the military and security fields, especially the reopening of the coastal road between Sirte and Misrata and the withdrawal of forces and foreign fighters from the so-called “Sirte Triangle.”

The Italian Foreign Minister also touched on the positive developments in the economic field after the resumption of oil production and export, expressing his hope for progress in unifying the Petroleum Facilities Guard to protect the oil sites.
