Libyan Bank Victim of Cyber Attack

The Libyan Commerce and Development Bank’s website and mobile application were reportedly hacked on Thursday evening.

The bank announced that its app, primarily its notification system, had been subjected to an online attack. This prompted officials to disable the app to bring the situation under control.

A number of Libyan activists published pictures from their phones showing the abnormal activity. Some users received a number of comical or insulting notifications, not related to the banking operations. A number of users alleged that their accounts had been hacked, and that sums of money were withdrawn from them. Others said that the total amount stolen from the bank amounted to about 790 million Libyan dinars.

The bank denied that the cyber-attack had breached the banking system or any customer accounts’ data. It also stressed that legal steps will be taken against those found responsible for the crime.
