Benghazi Police Seizes 800kg of Cannabis

Benghazi’s Police have seized about 800kg of cannabis hidden inside a truck in the city of Ajdabiya. The Anti-Drugs Department has estimated the drugs’ value at about 14 million Libyan dinars.

According to media sources, the drugs came from Algeria to the Libyan city of Zintan and were en route to Tobruk where they were due to be distributed.

Last month, the Libyan National Army (LNA) announced the beginning of a law enforcement operation to impose security in the eastern city of Benghazi. The General Command said in a statement that all military units of the LNA are to support the Ministry of Interior in implementing the operation. The objective is to eliminate crime and arrest all outlaws in the city, the LNA explained.

Drug trade in Libya has proliferated since the 2011 civil war. In December, the Maltese authorities seized 612kg of cocaine en route to Libya, in a record-breaking haul worth some 69 million euros.
