Berlin Wants Biden Administration to Engage More in Libya

German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas called on the administration of US President Joe Biden to show more engagement in Libya.

“The United States has the means and the influence to play a bigger role,” he noted at an event in Berlin.

Notably, the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) resumed its session listening to candidates for the upcoming interim executive authority. These will then be voted on by LPDF members.

A Presidential Council will consist of three members, and a Prime Minister and two deputies will be voted on by 5 February. The list of candidates includes 21 names for the position of Prime Minister, and 24 for the Presidency Council.

“The selection mechanism outlined that a candidate must receive 70% of the vote within his/her electoral college to be successful. As none of the candidates reached this threshold in today’s vote, the process moves now into the second stage of list forming,” the UN said on Tuesday evening.
