Italy is ready to cooperate with Libya’s new Presidential Council to support it during the next phases of the transition process, the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement noted that Rome welcomed “with great satisfaction” the outcome of the Libyan Parliament’s plenary session that granted confidence to the Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba.

Italy hailed the approval of Dbaiba’s government saying it was an important and encouraging result within the peace process. “This event will lead the way to an effective institutional transition in favour of the unity of Libya,” it noted.

“After a decade of conflict, Libyans have shown their great will and determination to overcome their differences through dialogue,” the statement added.

Rome stressed the necessity of holding Libya’s general elections on time, calling for “concrete” implementation of the ceasefire agreement. This would begin with the complete withdrawal of all foreign fighters and mercenaries, and launch a national reconciliation process.
