Biden Urges UN to Take Swift Action On Libya

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden hosted the Permanent Representatives of the UN Security Council, where he reaffirmed his commitment to values-based global leadership and re-engagement with international institutions, especially the United Nations.

Biden stressed the need for the Security Council to take action on a range of regional crises, including those in Libya, Syria, Yemen, Ethiopia, and Burma.

Last month, Biden extended the national emergency to Libya by one year. “The situation in Libya continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” Biden said in an executive order.

Libya fell into chaos after the collapse of the regime of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.
However, the country is trying to restore stability after appointing the new Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba a few weeks ago. Dbaiba pledged to lead the country to general elections in December 2021.
