On Wednesday, the European Union (EU) Mission in Libya said that the bloc supports Libya’s efforts to curb the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, the EU mission said that €22 million had been mobilized in 2020 to assist Libya in its response. It added that the funds are to contribute to improving national detection and surveillance mechanisms, boost preventive measures, and support Libya’s national healthcare system.

This comes in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to help prevent the spread of the virus among Libya’s most vulnerable communities affected by conflict, forced displacement, and migration.

The EU’s assistance aims to establish better national coordination mechanisms for the detection and surveillance of infection clusters, improve public awareness, and effective preventive measures.

The funding continues to support Libya’s public healthcare system and allow for urgent investments in medical equipment, and personal protective equipment for healthcare workers who are at the front lines in the fight against the global epidemic.
