Organisation of IRINI Still Ongoing, says EC Spokesperson

A spokesperson for Foreign Affairs at the European Commission, Peter Stano, said that work on managing and organizing Operation IRINI to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya is still going on.

According to the Italian news outlet Agenzia Nova, Stano stated that the management of IRINI would be discussed during the first organizational conference that started on Wednesday, April 1st, and is still ongoing.
 
“The basic task of IRINI is to monitor and strengthen the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations on Libya, the rescuing of migrants is not part of its mission.” Stano said. Member states have pledged personal commitment and contributions to ensure continuous work for the ships and personnel part of the IRINI mission.

The European Union launched Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI on the 1st of April 2020. The mission’s core task of implementing the UN arms embargo will be through the use of aerial, satellite and maritime assets.
